Course Requirements

The following is a brief description of the course assignments that satisfy the course objectives.  Scholars must refer to the electronic textbook for the specific assignment objectives, assignment discussion, examples, instructions and grading criteria before beginning any assignment.

PI Scholar's Confidential Personal Information
Scholars will provide the instructor with contact and work information by sending an e-mail to the instructor with the information requested in the first assignment of the e-text.  This will remain confidential to the instructor only except for the scholar's e-mail address which will be provided to all scholars for the purpose of on-line presentations.

CA1 Memo of Intent
Scholars will write a memo to the instructor following standard memo format provided in the e-text.  The memo will state the scholar's current registration status, identify registration problems if any, state the option selected for completing EVOC 519, identify the grade the scholar hopes to earn in EVOC 519 with a plan for how that grade will be achieved.  Scholars will describe any special needs anticipated during the quarter with a suggested solution for meeting those needs.  Scholars will describe the software and hardware they will use for completion of 519 coursework.  The memo will be submitted as an e-mail attachment.

WR1  Computer Software
Scholars will locate and describe three specific software programs that provide educational support for a class they teach or would like to teach in the future.  Reports should include system requirements necessary to support the programs and a description of how these programs would benefit the instructor and/or the students in a specific vocation.

CA2  Digital Photography and Graphic Illustrations
Scholars will use a digital camera to take a portrait photograph of themselves.  Scholars will crop and reduce the size of the photo then save it as a jpg file suitable for electronic transfer and publication.  Scholars will locate a "free" graphic from the Web to download or capture for use in a document and save it as a file.  Scholars will select and insert a graphic from the library of the software used for the assignment.  Scholars will be introduced to various graphic capabilities of word processing programs.  Scholars will send these illustrations to the instructor with a memo describing the camera that was used,  how the graphics were located and modified, and a description of the software used to accomplish these tasks.  The report will follow standard memo format and be submitted via e-mail attachment.

WR2  Compare and Contrast Two Computer Systems
Scholars will research then write a report in standard memo format to compare and contrast a Personal Computer (PC) laptop which runs in the Windows environment with a Macintosh (Mac) laptop which runs in the Mac operating system (OS) environment.  Laptops will be evaluated based the ability to support and run the software selected in WR1 as well as features.  Reports should include hardware specifications, price, and capabilities.  Reports will be submitted via e-mail attachment.

CA3  Slide Show
Skills acquired in the previous competency assignments will be incorporated into a Power Point presentation for a short lesson suitable for a class the scholar teaches.   The application of animation, transitions, sound effects and ungrouping clip art will be introduced.  More advanced capabilities may be addressed respective to the computer literacy of the class-at-large.  Slide shows will be e-mailed to the instructor as an with a memo describing how previous skills were used in this task.

WR3  Web Resources
Scholars will use a search engine to locate 8 Web sites specific to a course they teach.  The URL (Web address) for these Web sites will be e-mailed to the instructor in a memo describing each Web site and explaining how the information on that site can be used by students or incorporated into activities and assignments related to their course.  The annotate list will be submitted in memo format as an attachment.

CA4  Web Site
Scholars will develop and publish an academic Web site for a course they currently teach or would like to teach in the future.
Scholars may
opt for an electronic presentation of their EVOC 519 assignments in lieu of a Web page for a class they teach.  Web page development will focus on basic principles of good design and practical application in education.  An example of both formats are presented in the e-text.  Novice computer users are encouraged to use TeacherWeb for this assignment.  Specific instructions and examples are located in the e-text.

WR4 Option 1:  Educational Technology Conference, Saturday, November 1, 8:00 to 3:00.  Lunch included with first 100 pre-registration
Scholars within commuting distance of CSUSB are encouraged to attend the Educational Technology Conference 2008.
Scholars attending are excused from the WR4 written report.  The Thursday, November 8 and Saturday, November 10 are cancelled to accommodate attendance to this beneficial event.  Lunch is included with pre-registration which ends on October 22.  EdTech Classroom Conference 2007 is a place for educators and those who are interested in education to learn how technology is impacts teaching and learning in the Inland Empire. This year's theme is 21st Century Learner Skills. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with colleagues, and share and discuss ways to effectively integrate technology into the standard-based curriculum.  For more information and to pre-register click on this link, http://ctap10.org/edtech

WR4  Option 2:  Technology Development Plan
Scholars will write a memo which provides an assessment of their computer literacy at the beginning of EVOC 519, their current ability at the end of the course and describing a plan for improving those skills in the future.  The plan must be detailed clearly outlining the specific skills, method of pursuit, and timeframe for acquisition.  It will be presented in memo format as an e-mail attachment.

FP  Final Presentation
Scholars will present their Power Point slide show from CA3 to the class by teaching the lesson as though we are their students.  Traditional scholars will
introduce themselves identify objectives and expected outcomes then present their slide show using the teaching monitor in class on the designated meeting date listed in the calendar below.  Distance learners may elect to attend the designated class meeting to present in person or present electronically  as an attachment or by publishing it on their Web sites to the class-at-large.  Electronic presentations require an e-mail introduction, objectives, and expected outcomes report as well as a lesson plan for the Power Point in lieu of attending class.

TeacherWeb:  TeacherWeb is recommended to develop your Web site to meet the "A" criteria for this class.

Course Evaluation Plan

Scholars are given the opportunity to remediate (correct and resubmit) any assignment that is completed and submitted on time but does not meet "A" criteria or expected proficiency.  The instructor will review the document and return it with suggestions.  Scholars may then revise the assignment and resubmit as often as necessary to earn full credit.  Late assignments forfeit the privilege of remediation and will earn a grade based on the number of objectives met in the initial submission.

Scholars are encouraged to seek the instructor's guidance and suggestions prior to submitting any assignment, including the final project.  All scholar's are expected to perform at a level of "B" or higher.  For this course any grade less than a "B" is inadequate.  My goal is for each scholar to achieve an "A" for the course.

Scholars are expected to turn in all assignments on or before the due date listed in the course schedule below. No excuses will be accepted.  Do your work early to avoid last minute issues.  Remediation is not available for work turned in late.   Early submission is always welcome.

Late work will significantly impact the scholar's grade.  The final grade for EVOC 519 will be lowered one letter grade for every assignment turned in late.  This means the fist late assignment lowers the grade to A-, the second to B+ and so on.  It is critical that all work be turned in ON TIME.  If you have a problem e-mail me ASAP to make arrangements.

An incomplete is at the instructor's discretion.  I do NOT give incompletes.  If you are unable to complete the work you should drop the course and complete all necessary paper work by the census date.  No drops will be processes after the census date.  You must either complete the work in a timely manner or you will fail the course.  If you fail, you can re-enroll in a subsequent quarter and challenge the "F" to receive your most recent grade.

Textbook/Bibliography

All required information will be presented on-line.  Grades and announcements are provided via e-mail to all scholars.  It is critical that scholars provide the information requested in the first assignment and verify they can both send and receive e-mail from the instructor.

There are two documents scholars must access to successfully complete EVOC 519 the syllabus and the e-text.  Scholar's should read the syllabus in its entirety and print the calendar then obtain the e-text and begin reviewing the information provided immediately upon enrolling in the course.  Additional resources will be obtained using the Internet.

The text for this course will be the EVOC 519 E-text which can be accessed by clicking on this link. http://www.etext.net.  On the left side, click "order e-text" link on the left just below the banner and enter the access code She519 then follow instructions. You will receive an e-mail with your user name (usually your e-mail) and password (eight capital letters). These are case sensitive and must be typed in exactly as they appear in the e-mail or you will not be able to access the e-Text.

Teaching and Learning with Microsoft Office and FrontPage by Timothy J. Newby ISBN 0-13-029287-7 is optional but recommended for scholars with little or no computer literacy or technology instructors seeking a good resource for their own classes.  It offers excellent step-by-step instructions, examples and exercises that support the assignments for EVOC 519.  It includes an interactive CD.  It can be purchased at the Coyote books store or on-line from Amazon or Barnes and Nobel.
